Iridium joins the satellite SOS band waggon

Iridium just announced a partnership with Qualcomm to provide an Iridium based SOS feature to the next generation of Snapdragon chips. This new functionality will be available end of 2023 on high end Android phones and seems to be quite similar to the feature provided by Apple thanks to it spartnership with Globalstar. Beyond smartphones, this will enable satellite SOS in other applications such as vehicles, specific devices, sailboats, etc…

This is the new addition to satellite SOS available on standard smartphones. This will probably lead to the disparition of the market of specific hiking devices based on Globalstar and Iridium (Globalstar Spot, Iridium Inreach) and of IoT only satellite devices.
